The growing participation of cryptocurrency companies in political activities has alarmed UK observers, following Elon Musk’s speech at a Whitehall event sponsored by several crypto firms.
Some of the sponsors included Athena Bitcoin Global, which has been criticized over claims that it is making money through scams to mislead unsuspecting victims in the United States.
Athena’s Legal Troubles in the US
The case is a lawsuit against Athena Bitcoin Global, which produces Bitcoin ATMs, by the Attorney General of the District of Columbia. The case accuses Athena of profiting from fraud by allowing deals that support scams. The complaint continued that 93 percent of deposits transacted at Athena’s machines in the first five months of operations in the District of Columbia were fraudulent. Some of the victims included the elderly, among whom one was reported to have lost his/her money amounting to $98,000 within three days.
The suit also alleges that Athena did not do much to avert these frauds, and she could not help the victims recover their money. Instead, the company is said to be enjoying the benefits of hidden charges for scam victims.
Political and Security Concerns in the UK
In the UK, there is an increase in concern regarding the role of digital currencies in politics. The lawmakers are concerned that malicious state actors or criminal groups may use the cryptocurrency transactions that are hard to track down to fund political parties. This has raised concerns of the possibility of foreign influence in UK elections just like in Moldavia, whereby Russia is reported to be planning to meddle in future elections using crypto.
Another aspect that has brought about a debate regarding the necessity of a tighter regulation of cryptocurrency is the increasing presence of the latter in the UK political system. The presence of such provisions in the next elections bill to outlaw crypto donations in politics is being sought by Labour MPs, especially. Such practices have already been banned in some countries, including Ireland, Greenland, and Brazil, which are concerned with money laundering and manipulation of elections.
Athena’s Stance and Response
Matias Goldenhorn, the CEO of Athena, reacted to the criticism by justifying the company’s political activities. He asserted that the UK needed to protect free speech and financial freedom. He described the accusations against Athena as a smear campaign and highlighted the use of Bitcoin as a freedom of speech. Goldenhorn also helped support the rally his company sponsored, claiming that it was an essential protest against censorship.
Although the company has been on the defensive, the inspection of the Athena operations and its increasing influence in the political sphere have made observers in the UK ponder the further consequences for the country’s regulatory framework regarding the digital currency.
