eToro enters New York with post-FTX regulations redefining the landscape of crypto competition, an important move toward US expansion.
The shift indicates more intense controls after the downfall of FTX. It also points out the existence of regulatory barriers in major financial markets.
Regulatory approval highlights New York challenges
eToro has already launched in New York, having received the authorization that it had been seeking. In February 2023, the firm received a BitLicense, but was delayed in being approved.
One of the most challenging crypto regulatory systems in the United States is the BitLicense. State regulators introduced it in 2015 to implement high compliance standards.
This system has approved fewer than 40 firms. Yet, not every approved company goes through with the introduction of services in the state.
In order to satisfy the needs, a number of companies create independent legal entities in New York. Others opt out of the market because compliance costs are high.
According to Andrew McCormick, the head of eToro US, the delay was more than expected. He observed that the company was looking forward to difficulties but a quicker implementation.
The collapse of FTX complicated the approval process. Regulators conducted more scrutiny on licensing and operational readiness.
Strong financial performance supports expansion
eToro had a good fourth-quarter performance earlier this year, which was fuelled by increased trading. The confidence of investors was restored after the US interest rates were reduced.
The firm recorded a net trading income of 115.6 million in the quarter. This was an increase of 43% on equities, commodities, and currencies.
The market environment was favorable to growth, but the crypto markets remained volatile. Bitcoin experienced notable losses in November 2025 after a prolonged rally.
Meanwhile, investors became increasingly interested in stocks that were related to AI. This trend created the concern of overvaluation and market risks.
The CEO of the firm, Yoni Assia, emphasized transforming client behavior. He observed that there was an initial interest of crypto traders in commodities.
The current regulations allowed eToro to list 20 crypto tokens. In the future, the company will seek an increase in the listing limit.
According to McCormick, the approval was a significant milestone for the firm. He stressed the need to attain high levels of compliance and customer protection.
Fragmented regulations remain a key concern
Analysts maintain that entry by eToro represents larger regulatory issues in the United States. The differences in crypto regulations across states pose a challenge to business operations.
McCormick verified that the crypto services of eToro are not available in Hawaii and Nevada. These loopholes indicate discrepancies in state-level policies.
The industry analysts still demand a single federal structure. Law suggestions are to be made to clarify the oversight roles among regulators.
The Clarity Act aims at establishing the roles of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Nevertheless, the development is still at a standstill because of political differences.
Analysts caution that the fragmentation of regulations can decelerate innovation and investment. It further makes it difficult to comply and to launch products.
Nevertheless, the fact that eToro entered the New York market is an indication of increased resilience in the industry. The companies are still adjusting to the tightening of regulations as they seek to grow into major markets.
