At the White House, President Donald Trump hosted a private dinner in the State Dining Room, where he invited approximately 130 major donors and leading business executives who had contributed to the future renovation of the historic house.
The $200 million project is one of the largest remodels in the second term of the Trump administration and one of the most significant projects, mainly due to the vision he had for expanding the entertainment space of the White House.
Major Donors Back $200 Million White House Ballroom
The 90,000-square-foot ballroom, designed to accommodate approximately 650 people, commenced construction last month. All the sides will be covered with bulletproof glass, and the design will be similar to the original version of the White House. Officials state that the renovation budget will be entirely financed through private contributions, with no taxpayer money being used.
During dinner, Trump complimented his guests on their contributions, describing them as legends and very good friends, both in terms of financial and personal support. The participants also represented prominent companies, including Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta Platforms, Amazon, Palantir Technologies, and Lockheed Martin. There were also affluent families and individuals, including the Winklevoss twins, the Adelson family, Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman, and oil magnate Harold Hamm.
Trump Calls White House a National Treasure
The president informed the audience that the White House was one of the most valuable places in America and that he was obligated towards its upkeep and enhancement. According to Trump, the new ballroom would facilitate hosting state dinners and international delegates, and that the Americans had waited long enough to get the addition.
Although Trump claimed that he could proceed without needing to go through zoning issues, the project has yet to be reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission. Nevertheless, these approvals may not be needed as White House staff secretary Will Scharf proposed. In the event, Trump presented the construction site of the ballroom, opening the curtains of the East Room as a victory in the sphere of real estate that the previous presidents had failed to achieve.
Trump Reveals Plan for Triumphal Arch Project
Besides the ballroom project, Trump announced his latest project, a giant triumphal arch inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The monument will be situated at the traffic circle at the end of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, featuring a statue of Lady Liberty. This was designed by Nicolas Charbonneau, an architect from Harrison Design, who made the plans available online, accompanied by captions stating, “America needs a triumphal arch.”
Trump declared that the building will be finished next year, in the 250th year of the United States’ independence. He also indicated that any unspent donations for the construction of the ballroom could be used on the arch project.
Continued White House Renovations
Other modifications that Trump has ordered in the White House include the refurbishment of the bathroom of the Lincoln Bedroom and the refurbishment of the Palm Room, which connects the Rose Garden. According to Axios, the president has commissioned dioramas and marble floor designs for use in future remodeling projects.
The redesign of the White House by President Trump is a testament to his personal commitment to modernizing and expanding this building, as well as his preference for utilizing his own resources. The proponents consider the projects as some of his legacies in promoting the glory of the historic site.
