As King Charles III and Queen Camilla prepare for their coronation on May 6, the Evening Standard newspaper has partnered with digital artist Trevor Jones and Apollo NFT to release a collection of commemorative Ethereum NFTs.
The “The Oath” collection is free on Nifty Gateway, with NFTs delivered to collectors’ wallets on May 7.
To claim the NFTs, interested parties can use a QR code printed in the newspaper or posted on billboards along Oxford Street. Jones aimed to simplify the process for first-time collectors by enabling them to register an account on Nifty Gateway using only an email address. The artist explained that with Layer-2 in place, the Ethereum blockchain’s carbon footprint is significantly reduced, making it an environmentally friendly option.
Embracing tradition and innovation
“The Oath” initially began as a physical painting by Jones, featuring Saint Edward’s Crown, worn by Queen Elizabeth II during her 1953 coronation.
Evening Standard CEO Charles Yardley expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting the combination of tradition, history, and the democratization of art in a modern format.
With this initiative, the Evening Standard joins the ranks of media outlets such as TIME, GQ, and Playboy in exploring Web3 opportunities. Jones, who has previously worked on collections like Bitcoin Angels and Man vs. Machine, is no stranger to the NFT scene.
This isn’t the first NFT collection to commemorate the British royal family either, as the QueenE collection was launched in September to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign.
