Popular streamer xQc has fueled the ongoing debate over the rise in the use of AI to create artwork. In a recent statement, the streamer claimed that artistic creations from OpenAI’s ChatGPT are better than the best work of most artists.
The current AI art trend involves using ChatGPT to create images in the style of the iconic Studio Ghibli films. Some examples are Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. OpenAI had previously mentioned that the viral nature of the new feature has been melting its AI’s GPUs. Meanwhile, streamers like Asmongold and Nmplol have come forward to note that it might be putting the future of art in danger. They also noted that artists may decide to follow alternate paths if people continue to use AI for art generation.
Streamer xQc used ChatGPT’s image generation features on his stream
The statement from xQc comes after he tried out the image generation tool of ChatGPT on his live stream. When a viewer criticized the AI-made pictures, the streamer was quick to respond. “Why do you call everything ‘slop’ these days?” he asked, noting that the term seems to be used to dismiss anything new. He also added, “A lot of AI art coming out is better than most artists’ best work.”
Backing his earlier statement, he said, “I don’t consume the method, I consume the product. If this gives me a better product, I have to give credit where credit is due.” His reactions have caused quite a stir on Reddit and X, with some users arguing about art as an expression and that machines will never replace humans. One user called the trend “slop because it takes zero effort to create,” while another wrote, “It’s impressive someone can miss the point of art and expression so confidently.”
However, some fans agree that AI is just another tool that can be used for creative purposes. They praised its convenience and speed, with a user noting, “He’s right. Most people don’t care how it’s made if it looks cool.” Another added, “I have zero issues with AI when it’s convenient, and I’m happy with the result.” xQc’s remarks come after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s humorous post on X, joking about people who are using his technology to turn him into a “twink ghibli style.”
