Peter Navarro also asked Canada to negotiate more equitably with the United States for trade. His remarks are in line with the announcement of a 35 percent tariff imposed on some Canadian imports that will go into effect starting August 1.
According to Navarro, Counselor to the President, Canadian citizens ought to pressure their leaders to talk honestly. He also stressed that time remains to engage in dialogues that will lower tariff rates. His comments indicate that the US is not against last-minute deals before the deadline.
US Pushes for Fair Trade Amid New Tariff Hike
The new 35 percent Trump tariff is a drastic step up from the earlier 25 percent tariff. According to Navarro, these measures depict the president’s work in providing solutions to trade imbalances. He said that the tariffs are needed to offset elevated taxes and trade barriers imposed on US exporters.
Navarro identified that the majority of Canadian export sales will still be covered by the USMCA, which has alleviated the impending effect of the tariffs. He explained that the new rates do not apply to those products traded in terms of the USMCA.
Canada Seen as Tough Trade Partner by US Officials
Canada lost Navarro, who was frustrated with its negotiation tactics. He termed the representatives of Canadian trade as very difficult to get along with relative to other partners. He juxtaposed this with the case of Mexico, where negotiations during Trump’s first term were quoted as having been fair and fruitful.
Although Navarro admitted that Canada has taken some steps to avoid adding more tariffs, he demanded additional collaboration. He referred to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts to protect Canada against higher rates and the fact that more fairness was required at the table.
US Considers Broader Tariff Policy for Other Nations
Trump indicated that he is considering doing the same (15 to 20 percent tariffs) with other key trade partners. He wrote to Prime Minister Carney publicly stating that several practices in Canadian trade were prejudicial to US interests. These were tariff and non-tariff barriers, which he says aggravate the US trade deficit.
According to Trump, fentanyl was not the only issue concerning relations with Canada. As he cautioned, other partners would be hit by such blanket tariffs unless trade terms were improved. On the announcement date, the US stock market went up, and the dollar gained.
Navarro says the President’s tariff strategy is working. He says it will send a clear message that the US will be treated fairly in any trade relations.
