Liberland is set to conduct its next national election entirely on the blockchain on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 14:22 CET. The micronation, located on disputed territory between Croatia and Serbia, was established in 2015 by Czech politician Vít Jedlička and operates under libertarian principles, voluntary association, and blockchain-based governance.
The government of Liberland functions through a decentralized platform where citizens participate directly in elections and policy decisions. According to its official records, Liberland adopted Bitcoin as its national currency before any other country and has maintained a blockchain-driven electoral system since its formation.
Blockchain Voting System Powers Direct Democracy
Liberland holds national elections every 90 days, with the current round marking the third vote in 2025. Citizens vote for congressional candidates by staking their digital assets through the Liberland Blockchain Portal. The system redistributes voting weight using an algorithm designed to balance representation. Citizens are allowed to vote for multiple candidates, but only those not receiving welfare benefits are eligible to participate.
All votes happen on-chain, and all bills made up by Congress must be ratified by a populace vote. Senate has the right to veto budget proposals and this has to move through Senate. Such a system enables a model crafted between direct and representative democracy, which is partly modeled on Polkadot OpenGov system.
Candidates Represent Diverse Backgrounds and Sectors
These people come in different industries and areas all over the country. There are incumbent members of the Congress who want re-election. Some of the most well known include Justin Sun of TRON blockchain fame becoming Prime Minister in October 2024 and being nominated by then President Jedlička to stay in the position. The other notable one is tech investor, Evan Luthra, who has invested in more than 300 startups and he is also a congressperson.
Another notable who has been representing Liberland internationally is Dr. Tariq Abbasi, an MBE awardee and Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London. Michal Ptáčník, who helped write the nation’s legal foundation, and Navid Saberin, a multilingual entrepreneur with interests in tech and commerce, are also among the candidates. Dorian Štern Vukotić, one of the system architects of Liberland’s blockchain, is campaigning for a third term with a focus on streamlining government operations.
Election Events and Ongoing Engagement
A public debate featuring all candidates is scheduled for Tuesday at 17:00 CET. As of July 1, only two days remain before the blockchain portal closes voting. All registered citizens can cast their votes by accessing the official platform and selecting candidates of their choice.
