Kalshi crypto spot volume reached a record as sentiment across the crypto market turned bullish over three days. Around $313 billion was added to market value, lifting capitalization from $2.19 trillion to $2.5 trillion.
Wednesday, August 19, also produced the largest short liquidation event in crypto history, with more than $2.7 billion in positions wiped out, according to CoinGlass. On the same day, Kalshi recorded new highs across two metrics.
Artemis data showed crypto spot volume reaching $268.89 million, while perpetual open interest rose to $18.69 million. Although both records appeared during the rally, they measure different market activity.

Kalshi Spot Volume Reflects Trading Attention
Artemis classifies Kalshi’s crypto-based event contracts as spot volume. Kalshi does not operate a spot order book because these contracts are binary yes-or-no markets tied to whether an asset closes above a specified level by a date.
Risk is limited to the amount committed to the contract, and traders do not face liquidation. As a result, activity can rise during bullish and bearish moves. Record volume therefore reflects attention around price swings rather than a directional position.
A similar pattern appeared in early June, when Kalshi posted a crypto volume record during the heaviest liquidation day since February. The latest $268.89 million reading again shows demand for event-based crypto contracts during volatile conditions without indicating whether traders expect prices to rise or fall.
Kalshi Perp Open Interest Tracks Held Exposure
Kalshi launched crypto perpetual futures on June 3, and trading volume exceeded $1 billion during the first week. Open interest provides a different signal because it measures positions that remain active rather than total contracts traded during a session.
The record $18.69 million reading came as the rally began. Artemis data showed open interest rising from roughly $2 million on June 4 to the August 19 record, interrupted only by a flat period in late June.
Positions that remain open overnight represent exposure carried beyond intraday trading. That makes open interest more useful than volume for showing how much leveraged positioning remains after daily activity ends.
Kalshi Records Show Rapid Growth From a Small Base
The $18.69 million open interest figure remains small compared with Binance or Hyperliquid, where perpetual futures open interest reaches billions of dollars. Kalshi therefore remains a minor venue by absolute size.
Its structure distinguishes the platform. Kalshi operates under a CFTC license in the United States, allowing leveraged crypto activity to clear through a regulated domestic market.
The August 19 figures are the latest Artemis has published. Crypto prices continued rising afterward, so the next update will show whether either record remained intact and whether open interest stayed elevated.
