Ethereum developers have quickly addressed recent finality issues experienced by the network’s Beacon chain, restoring stability and ensuring continued functionality. The blockchain experienced hiccups on May 11 and May 12, 2023, with block finalizations being halted for 25 minutes and over an hour, respectively. Ethereum’s Beacon chain community health consultant, Superphiz, reassured that the incidents had “zero impact on chain activity.”
Patches released for Prysm and Teku clients
In response to the finality issues, Ethereum developers rolled out patches for Prysm Labs and Teku clients. These upgrades implement optimizations to prevent beacon nodes from consuming excessive resources, ensuring a more stable network moving forward. The Ethereum Foundation clarified in a statement that although the exact cause of the finality issues is still under investigation, the problem “appears to have been caused by high load on some of the Consensus Layer clients.”
The Ethereum community has placed great importance on client diversity, with more software clients available to network validators contributing to a more robust and secure network. The Ethereum Foundation shared similar sentiments in their update, acknowledging the temporary inability to reach finality and highlighting the network’s resilience. “Although the network was unable to finalize, the network was, as designed, live and end users could transact on the network,” they said.
