During their public exchange on Twitter developer @0xngmi from DefiLlama claimed proof that Artemis stole their proprietary data but removed any acknowledgment. The post on X platform triggered a discussion about data ownership morality in the decentralized finance (DeFi) field after it exposed the charges.
DefiLlama Alleges Data Misuse by Artemis
Users consider DefiLlama among the most popular platforms for DeFi analytics data. It provides real-time data that spans various protocols and functions as an essential tool for individuals interested in accurate DeFi metric research.
A popular social media post by @0xngmi identified the data usage of a Capital-backed competitor using information stolen from DefiLlama without appropriate recognition of its origin. A post displayed screenshots with charts on Artemis’ platform and used “Artemis” as the source label although the data was originally from DefiLlama.
To verify the claim, the developer revealed that DefiLlama had uploaded random numbers into the database of a defunct protocol. After DefiLlama published the numbers they obtained from their research into the crypto market, they resurfaced on the Artemis platform, where the source was listed as Artemis. The evidence showed how Artemis used DefiLlama statistics but failed to mention their source.
Artemis Responds to the Accusations
According to Crystal Tai, who works at Artemis, a software bug led to the attributing problem. Tai also said that the Artemis team correctly attributed DefiLlama in other cases.
Artemis delivered its statement through X after the allegations started spreading. The company told users that DefiLlama provides Artemis with data. DefiLlama received insufficient credit for its metrics because of a company oversight that has since been fixed according to company statements. The statement formally declared that the business will maintain its dedication toward transparency and proper recognition of sources.
Ethical Concerns in the Open-Source DeFi Space
The controversy highlights broader concerns about ethical data usage in the DeFi space. DefiLlama’s comprehensive analytics have made it a key player in the industry, providing data that gives it a competitive advantage. However, when competitors use such data without proper acknowledgment, it raises concerns about trust and fair practices.
The DeFi ecosystem is built on decentralization and transparency, making ethical data handling a fundamental principle. Some critics argue that open-source projects are particularly vulnerable to data misuse, allowing competitors to take advantage without accountability.
Despite the criticism, Artemis has maintained that the issue was unintentional and assured that all sources are properly credited. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical standards in the growing DeFi analytics sector.
