Brenda Lee’s 1958 holiday classic, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” has been reimagined in Spanish with the help of artificial intelligence, as Universal Music Group (UMG) releases “Noche Buena y Navidad.” Produced by Latin music expert Aureo Baqueiro.
This updated version uses AI technology developed by SoundLabs to transform Lee’s original English vocals into Spanish, offering a fresh twist on a timeless track. With Lee’s approval, UMG sees this project as proof that AI can preserve an artist’s legacy while introducing classical music to new audiences.
AI’s role in reimagining classic hits
SoundLabs’ MicDrop, an AI-powered vocal plug-in, played a central role in creating the Spanish version of the song. The technology processed Lee’s voice data from the original recording, translating her iconic vocals into Spanish while retaining the distinctive tone of her 13-year-old self. The instrumental and backing vocals remain unchanged, with AI adjusting only the lead vocals. UMG claims this marks a milestone in commercial music, as it’s one of the first times a vocal model based directly on an artist’s voice has been used in this way, showcasing how AI can enhance, rather than alter, a song’s essence.
AI’s rising influence in the music industry
The use of AI in music is becoming increasingly popular across the industry. Tools like Sony’s Flow Machines, which produced the Beatles-inspired track “Daddy’s Car,” and AIVA, an AI composer for classical music, are gaining traction. The AI music market, valued at $294 million in 2023, is forecasted to grow to $2.66 billion by 2032. About 60% of musicians already use AI in their creative processes, mainly due to the demand for personalized listening experiences. Major platforms like Spotify and Apple Music also leverage machine learning to curate tailored playlists, often leading users to discover new or lesser-known artists.
Boosting emerging artists and fan experiences with AI
AI is reshaping how listeners discover music, particularly for independent and emerging artists. Spotify’s Discover Weekly feature, powered by machine learning algorithms, helps small artists gain exposure alongside industry giants. AI-curated playlists have helped launch careers, with artists like Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X benefiting from this technology. Beyond music discovery, AI is also enhancing live performances, with some artists using it to create real-time visual effects, adding an interactive dimension to concerts and music videos. Virtual reality concerts are also emerging, allowing fans to experience performances in entirely new formats.
