A wallet containing 500 BTC of a convicted drug dealer who had not transacted with his account in a long time has just become active, which attracted attention on the crypto market.
The transfer is preceded by years of inactivity and ambiguity regarding access to the funds.
Officials said that the movement was a law enforcement operation. Nevertheless, there is no clear information as to the mechanism by which the private keys are accessed.

500 BTC moved from the wallets of Clifton Collins after a decade of no transactions. Reportedly, law enforcement managed to gain access to the private key in an undisclosed cyber team operation. | Source: Arkham Intelligence.
Dormant Wallet Activity Sparks Speculation
The wallets containing Bitcoin were dormant since 2017, when Clifton Collins was arrested. The private keys were lost at that time. They were written on paper and sealed in a fishing rod case, which was subsequently destroyed.
Most recently, blockchain tracking platform Arkham Intelligence flagged one of the transactions of 500 BTC. The money was transferred to a new address and is lying idle. The worth of the amount transferred is approximately $35.5 million.
Overall, approximately $426 million of Bitcoin is distributed in 12 Bitcoin addresses associated with Collins. The Majority of these wallets have not been active.
This abrupt action has given rise to a lot of speculation. Other people who were watching it are of the opinion that the keys were later retrieved. There could have been other backups or duplicates, according to others.
Law Enforcement Confirms Seizure
The Irish Garda and Europol verified that the wallet had not been lost. The government said that the money was confiscated as part of a planned operation. It was owned by Coinbase Custody, the place where the 500 BTC is frequently deposited and stored, where the confiscated digital resources are kept.
It was not described how access was gained. It is this insufficiency that has caused more questions to be cast on the methods employed.
Their involvement was confirmed by a statement of the Irish Criminal Assets Bureau. According to them, the captured Bitcoin was the proceeds of crime. The statement did not contain any technical information.
The move signifies that the authorities were in control of at least one wallet. It also indicates that there is a prospect of getting access to more funds in the future.
Possible Methods Behind Wallet Access
Bitcoin encryption is commonly believed to be safe. In the present technology, it is extremely unlikely to break down the private keys directly. Nonetheless, there are cases where access is possible even without the key.
A wallet file is one of the theories, and it is a wallet.dat file that is recovered. Provided that such a file existed, it might have been hacked with superior means. This strategy relies on frail passwords or outmoded encryption.
The other possibility is faulty key generation. Weaker randomness was occasionally used in early Bitcoin wallets. This would render keys more foreseeable in some circumstances.
It has also been speculated that other copies of the keys were in existence. The storage method might have been accessed or known to some other person.
Europol referred to advanced decryption generally. But the very method of procedure was not confirmed.
Broader Implications for Remaining Funds
The successful penetration of the wallet makes it questionable about the rest of the 11 addresses. In case of such approaches, one can recapture more money.
Other Bitcoin holdings are already in possession of authorities as a result of dissimilar operations. In late 2025, some of these assets were acquired as a result of a large crypto mixer raid.
In the meantime, the other wallets that belonged to Collins have not been found. The players in the market still keep a close check on any activity that goes on.
The case shows that there are still numerous issues associated with the protection and restoration of digital property. It also demonstrates that even lost wallets, which have been lost for a long time, might not be that far away.
